1.) Avoid smoke: Try to avoid going around people who smoke and if you smoke, it might be a good time to consider quitting. Cigarette smoke irritates the sinus passages causing them to swell and restrict the flow of mucus.

2.) Use a humidifier: Regulating the moisture in the air of your home can help cut back on sinus irritation from dry air. The level of humidity should be 30-60%.

3.) Inhale steam: Taking a warm bath or hovering over a bowl of warm water with a towel over your head can unclog sinuses and decrease pain temporarily. Try putting some Eucalyptus oil in the water to breathe in. A hot shower can also do wonders.

4.) Eat properly: They say you are what you eat. That’s why it’s important to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet. Try some warm foods and don’t be afraid to add a little spice like cayenne pepper to really open up the nasal passages.

5.) Get rest: Sleeping is important in general, but even more so when your body is off balance. When your sinuses act up get a good night’s sleep to help your immune system fight off germs that cause infections.

You know it’s not going to be an easy few days to follow when you wake up with a familiar scratch in your throat, your head is feels cloudy, and all you want to do is go back to sleep. These signs just might indicate that you have the common cold. Our CareXpress urgent care team has compiled 4 helpful tips that you may be able to follow in order to get over your pesky cold. If you’re at the starting stages of a cold, you may even be able to avoid a trip to the urgent care clinic simply by following these tips.

1.) Clear your sinus cavities: Use a decongestant spray in your nose for almost instant, temporary relief. If you’re one of those people who cannot handle spraying something up your nose you could try a decongestant pill, instead. There are plenty of over-the-counter medications.

2.) Blow your nose from one side at a time: You may have noticed that when you try to blow your nose from both nostrils at the same time, you feel even more pressure. This is due to the forceful blowing which actually forces nasal fluids to go further up into your sinuses. To prevent infection, blow your nose by closing one nostril at a time and blowing out of only the open nostril.

3.) Eat some chicken soup: This may seem way too simple of a solution, but eating chicken soup may truly help you feel better. Research tells us that chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties and the warmth of the broth helps to temporarily speed up the movement of mucus through the nose. That’s right, your mother knew what was good for you all those years!

4.) Get lots of rest: Sleep is vital to the proper functioning of the human body, especially when you’re sick. You should never allow yourself to feel guilty about staying home from work or school, because your friends will thank you for not spreading the illness and so will your body once you receive the proper amount of rest.

CareXpress Urgent Care staff know that the pressure of studying and taking tests at school are already beginning to be placed on students of all ages. A lot of students get a little jittery around test taking time. As school gets geared up again for the fall semester, we don’t want you to let test anxiety or natural stress about taking tests in school bring you down.

CareXpress Urgent Care is providing this compiled list of healthy test taking tips to get you started in the right direction this year.

1.) Prepare a study outline: Making yourself a study plan can help you focus on the list of the most important topics to be covered. Use the guide you make when studying.

2.) Remove any distractions: A lot of students have reported that studying at home is too much distraction, because they focus on what they can be doing rather than studying. There’s a reason why libraries still exist. They’re a great, quite place to study!

3.) Get plenty of rest: This one seems like a “no-brainer,” but you’d be surprised just how many students stay up too late the night before an exam. Make sure you go to bed early enough to get plenty of rest.

4.) Eat a proper meal: If you eat a balanced breakfast it will be one less worry during the test. Nothing distracts you more during a test than a growling stomach.

5.) Just breathe and relax: Take a deep breathe before the test begins. Don’t forget to let it out! If you have your pencils, scrap paper or other materials allowed that’s another few things you don’t have to worry about. If you’ve followed your study plan, you should be prepared.

6.) Cross check your answers: When you’ve finished your test, always cross check your answers. Double checking helps you make sure you didn’t make the mistake of skipping a question or filling in the right answer on the wrong line.

Imagine that you’re walking along and, seemingly, out of nowhere a divot in the ground catches you off guard. This scenario has happened to urgent care patients more times than imaginable. They report something along the lines of their foot slipping into a hole, knocking them off balance, and then the ankle rolling. This is one common way a sprained ankle happens.

The sprained ankle injury can also occur as a result of a twist, turn or stretching of the ankle that isn’t normal. You don’t want to avoid treating a sprained ankle (at an urgent care or otherwise) as leaving it untreated can cause other problems.

Is it really an urgent care worthy problem?

Truthfully, it really does depend on the nature of your injury. Of course, it’s always better to be safe by getting checked out by an urgent care specialist, because a simple sprained ankle can go from just that to causing a tear in the bands of tissue called ligaments. These ligaments are important to your ankle, because they help hold the bones together. More specifically, ligaments stabilize the joints. When the ligaments are forced beyond the normal range of motion into a sprain that is untreated it can cause further damage.

A few treatments you should be aware of include rest, the use of crutches, and the possible use of a splint. Resting the ankle in question is the main key to recovery. If walking with a sprained ankle is too painful, you may be required to use crutches until the pain subsides. An urgent care doctor may also recommend that you use a splint to keep your ankle stable.

Urgent Care News Report: Daylight Savings Time Can Impact Health

CareXpress Warns That Shifting Sleep Patterns Causes Problems

Our urgent care staff always hears people complaining about how daylight savings time makes them groggy, but did you also know that documented studies would suggest that shifting sleep patterns even by one hour can have negative impacts on your health?

The idea of daylight savings time was, according to history, introduced in the United States in 1918, repealed by most states, and then brought back again by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. Today, it is still used as a means to allow people to take advantage of having more time outside, in the light, during spring and summer months. There’s no doubt that “springing forward” hurts more than “falling back” an hour, but that loss of one hour could make you feel more than just a little grumpy.

Our urgent care staff looked at a few studies regarding the matter.

In 2012, a study was conducted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The researchers found that the Monday and Tuesday following daylight savings time in the spring have been associated with a 10% increase in heart attacks.

Another study was conducted in Finland in 2016. The researchers found that the stroke rate increased by 8% within two days after daylight savings time began.

The research consisted of comparing stroke rates between more than 3,000 people who were hospitalized the week after daylight savings time began and stroke rates from more than 11,000 people who were hospitalized two weeks prior to or after the week of transition. Not only did the research indicate a higher number of strokes occurred after daylight savings time, but it also found that cancer patients were 25% more likely to have a stroke just after the time change.

The overall belief, by experts, is that these medical issues most likely happened as a result of people severely messing up their sleep patterns. To avoid complications it is suggested that you ease yourself into the new sleeping routine by gradually shifting over the next several days. Doing so is supposed to help reset your internal clock so that you won’t be at an increased risk for medical problems.
