All throughout this month of love, we’ve talked about the heart and how to keep it healthy. We’ve talked about what you should eat to keep your heart in great shape, but what about what you shouldn’t? Well, CareXpress Urgent Care has some tips for that as well. It should be noted that you don’t have to cut out these foods entirely, you can still enjoy them on occasion but they shouldn’t make up the bulk of your diet.

Highly Processed meats: Processed meats refer to meats like deli meats, hot dogs, bacon, and other packaged easy to prepare meats. These meats are often loaded with sodium and nitrates. They can also hav a large number of preservative in them that can harm the heart. You should really try to limit yourself to 2 servings a week for these kinds of meats. Raw beef or frozen boneless, skinless chicken can be great meat alternatives. Just make sure the chicken has not been infused with sodium-rich broth.

Refined Grains: White bread and rice, low fiber and sugary cereals, sweets and other refined carbohydrates can also be bad for your heart and overall health. High levels of processing often removes much of the fiber, minerals, and fatty acids that make whole grain options healthier. These kinds of grains also cause a much higher spike in blood sugar than they’re whole grain counterparts. Good replacements are whole grain breads and brown rice. High fiber cereals can replace the sugary ones.

Sugary Sodas: Surprise! Soda is terrible for you and your heart! In addition to causing weight gain and rotting teeth, sodas and other sugary drinks affect your heart much the same way highly refined grains do. Diet sodas are ok, but they have no nutritional value. Water or other low calorie low sugar drinks like certain teas is really the best replacement.

Often times when we take care of a person with a highly infectious virus, we end up getting sick ourselves. While there’s no full-proof method to protect yourself from any viruses, here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself from whatever your roommates have.

Wash your hands: Not a hard rule to follow. Anytime your helping or giving care to the sick party, wash your hands afterwards. No fancy washing technique required. Just running water and antibacterial soap to wash away the viruses before they can infect you. If the faucet is not on hand for some reason, hand sanitizer will also work though too much can dry out your skin.

Get your Flu shot: No need to worry about a virus if your immune! Getting your annual flu shot will dramatically increase the chances that you won’t catch the flu! So, if your caring for a roommate that couldn’t (or wouldn’t) get the flu shot then your dramatically less likely to catch the flu from them!

Keep your hands off yourself: According to statistics on average people touch their face about 2-3 times a minute. Touching your face with unwashed hands is an easy way for germs to get into your body through your nose, mouth, or even eyes. We’ve all gotten cuts before, that’s just part of life. But have you ever thought about how to properly clean a cut? It can sound minor, but an improperly cleaned cut can lead to infections. CareXpress Urgent care has a few tips on how to properly clean a cut.

  • First off, you should wash your hands before trying to handle a cut, if cleaning a cut on another human like your child, wear disposable gloves to protect yourself and the other party.
  • Make sure the party is affected party is lying down and stable.
  •  After the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound by running it under tap water, saline, or by using an alcohol-free wipe. Avoid using antiseptic as this can damage the skin
  • Cover the wound with a sterile dressing such as a bandage or plaster. Apply pressure to the wound to staunch the flow.
  • If blood soaks through the bandage, leave it in place and apply another one. Keeping pressure on the wound
  • If the wound is somewhere where it’s unlikely to come into contact with dirt or clothing, leave it uncovered so it heals faster. If your not sure, cover it with a sterile bandage or gauze to make sure.

How do you tell if a cut is serious enough to require medical attention? Here are a few signs to look for that the cut may require serious medical attention.

  • The wound is caused by an animal or human bite
  • The wound is long and/or spurting blood
  • Something is embedded in the wound
  • You can see fat or bone in the wound

As temperatures change for a new season, it is quite common for different allergens to cause people to suffer from sinus pain. There are different types of sinus pain which can include anything from throbbing headaches to pressure around the eyes, nose and cheeks. 1.) Avoid smoke: Try to avoid going around people who smoke and if you smoke, it might be a good time to consider quitting. Cigarette smoke irritates the sinus passages causing them to swell and restrict the flow of mucus.

2.) Use a humidifier: Regulating the moisture in the air of your home can help cut back on sinus irritation from dry air. The level of humidity should be 30-60%.

3.) Inhale steam: Taking a warm bath or hovering over a bowl of warm water with a towel over your head can unclog sinuses and decrease pain temporarily. Try putting some Eucalyptus oil in the water to breathe in. A hot shower can also do wonders.

4.) Eat properly: They say you are what you eat. That’s why it’s important to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet. Try some warm foods and don’t be afraid to add a little spice like cayenne pepper to really open up the nasal passages.

5.) Get rest: Sleeping is important in general, but even more so when your body is off balance. When your sinuses act up get a good night’s sleep to help your immune system fight off germs that cause infections.

1.) Prepare a study outline: Making yourself a study plan can help you focus on the list of the most important topics to be covered. Use the guide you make when studying.

3.) Get plenty of rest: This one seems like a “no-brainer,” but you’d be surprised just how many students stay up too late the night before an exam. Make sure you go to bed early enough to get plenty of rest.

That heart racing, painful feeling in your chest could easily be misconstrued as a heart attack or a panic attack, especially if you’re someone who has never experienced either one or you don’t know the signs of either. The fear of having a heart attack or a panic attack can even further complicate matters, so our urgent care doctors would agree that it’s important for patients to be able to distinguish between the two.

While the two heart-related conditions can seem very similar, there are a few key factors to pay attention to when determining the differences. Here is a list of symptoms for both heart attacks and panic attacks which was compiled by our urgent care staff to help you better understand what might happen during each of these experiences.

Heart Attack Symptoms: 

  • Escalating chest pain that reaches maximum severity after a few minutes.
  • Continuos pain, pressure, fullness or aching in the chest area.
  • A traveling or radiating pain or discomfort from the chest to other areas, such as one or both arms, abdomen, back, shoulders, neck, throat or jaw.
  • Pain brought on by exertion.
  • Shortness of breath.

Panic Attack Symptoms: 

  • Increased heart rate.
  • Sharp or stabbing chest pain that lasts only 5 to 10 seconds.
  • Pain that is localized to one small area.
  • Pain that usually occurs at rest.
  • Pain that accompanies anxiety.
  • Pain that is relieved or worsened when you change positions.
  • Pain that can be reproduced or worsened by pressing over the area of pain.

The best thing you can do is learn the signs, trust your body, and above all else seek medical help if you ever suspect that you are having a heart attack. never underplay your symptoms or trick yourself into thinking it will “just go away”.
