Keep Yourself Healthy while Nursing a Family Member

Getting sick is no fun. You feel uncomfortable, you feel hungry but nothing sounds good, and if you're sick enough someone else might have to take care of you and end up getting sick themselves. For many families, that’s exactly what happens, especially during the holidays and flu season. Often times when we take care of a person with a highly infectious virus, we end up getting sick ourselves. While there’s no full-proof method to protect yourself from any virus, here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself from whatever illness you might be around.

Wash your hands: Easy right! Anytime you're helping or giving care to the sick party, wash your hands afterward. No fancy washing technique required. Just warm running water and antibacterial soap to wash away the virus before they it infect you. If a sink isn’t around, hand sanitizer will also work, but be careful because too much can dry out your skin.

Get your flu shot: No need to worry about a virus if you're immune to it! Getting your annual flu shot will dramatically decrease your chances of catching the flu! If you're caring for a friend or family member that didn’t get their flu shot then you're dramatically less likely to contract the illness.

Keep your hands away from yourself: On average, people touch their face about 2-3 times a minute. Touching your face with unwashed hands is an easy way for germs to get into your body through your nose, mouth, or even eyes. Keep your hands away from your face to further avoid getting sick when caring for someone.
