Urgent Care Tips On Staying Healthy While Traveling This Winter
When people think about flying the first risks that come to mind may not be health related, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this should be something of concern. When planning a long-distance flight for business or pleasure this winter here are a few key things our urgent care found that you should keep in mind.
- Long-distance airplane rides pose a greater risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) to travelers. This occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein, typically in the leg and it is suggested that this is due to limited movement for an extended period of time. To avoid this try to walk around the plane on occasion, stretch often, and consider wearing compression socks.
- The air cabin poses health risks due to close proximity to others, low humidity, reduced air pressure, and low-frequency vibration. To avoid illnesses and being uncomfortable on board the airplane, wash your hands thoroughly before eating, after eating, and after using the toilet. For your comfort consider carrying on eye drops, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and a moisturizing hand lotion.
- Staying hydrated with plenty of water is always recommended for optimal health, as well. Of course, the age old trick of chewing gum to relieve pressure in the ears may also be something you want to do.
- Jet lag isn’t something that can really be helped for most people as the body just takes time to adjust to time differences. If you’re traveling far enough outside of your time zone it is recommended that you don’t jump right into your activities, but instead try to plan for enough time to recover. Rest is one of the best healing mechanisms your body has to offer, so take advantage of it!
