CareXpress Urgent Care: Ear Infections For Children And Adults
It’s not uncommon for someone to feel pain inside their ears when they come down with a common cold, but occasionally middle ear infections can happen as a secondary symptom. Earaches from a cold can range from mild to very painful and the pain can vary from sharp, dull or burning. Ear infections are usually painful for most patients due to the amount of inflammation and buildup of fluids in the middle ear. Our urgent care staff would agree that if you have persistent pain it is a sign of ear infection and you need medical care.
Ear infections are more common in children, in part, because their Eustachian tubes are narrower and more horizontal, but that doesn’t mean adults are except from getting infections, as well. There are many more symptoms to keep an eye out for when dealing with children than there are for adults and below, our urgent care staff has researched and listed the signs of ear infections for both.
Symptoms Of Ear Infections For Children:
1.) Ear pain, especially when lying down
2.) Tugging or pulling at an ear
3.) Difficulty sleeping
4.) Crying more than usual
5.) Acting more irritable than usual
6.) Difficulty hearing or responding to sounds
7.) Loss of balance
8.) Fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher
9.) Drainage of fluid from the ear
11.) Loss of appetite
Symptoms of Ear Infections For Adults:
1.) Ear pain
2.) Drainage of fluid from the ear
3.) Diminished hearing
The warning signs of an ear infection can indicate a number of conditions. It’s vital to get an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. Call your urgent care doctor or bring your child into the urgent care facility if symptoms last for more than a day, if ear pain is severe, if your child is sleepless or irritable after a cold, or you observe a discharge of fluid, pus or bloody discharge from the ear. An adult with ear pain or discharge should see a doctor as soon as possible.
