CareXpress Urgent Care Answers: What Is Allergic Asthma?

CareXpress Urgent Care Provides Information For You

About 1 in 12 people (25 million) have asthma according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), but did you know there are many different types of asthma? In fact, for many of those patients asthma and allergies are often two sides of the same coin which can be referred to as allergic asthma. Today, our urgent care team will seek to shed some light on the subject of allergic asthma and provide some answers for our readers.

As you probably already know, asthma is a disease that occurs when branches of the windpipe, or bronchial tubes, become inflamed and obstruction of the passages block air from entering and leaving the lungs. Allergic asthma occurs when an allergy sets off an asthma flare up. This can be caused by anything that people are normally allergic to including, but not limited to: Mold, insects, pollen, grass, dust, food, and pet dander.

Our urgent care team knows that springtime presents a lot more opportunities for allergens to be in the air and causes patients with allergic asthma to have an attack. When the body overreacts to the allergen(s), the airways quickly become inflamed and over time are flooded with thick mucus. Just like with non-allergic asthma symptoms your symptoms may be any of the following:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid breathing in attempt to gasp for air
  • Chest tightening

If you have allergic asthma you may notice the condition become worse after strenuous activities like exercising or after breathing in smoke, dust, or any chemical fumes. Since there are potential allergens practically everywhere it is important for patients to be tested, learn their triggers, and learn how to prevent an attack. Luckily, our urgent care offers services for allergy-related symptoms! If you’re experiencing any allergy-related symptoms fell free to visit CareXpress urgent care.
